When it comes to cosmetic surgery, breast augmentation continues to be one of the most popular procedures out there. According to People, there were 290,467 people who had this surgery in 2016. With so many breast augmentation procedures performed every year, there are bound to be some people who have issues after the fact, and this is where breast revision surgery comes up.
Breast revision surgery is done to correct issues caused by a previous breast augmentation or enhancement procedure. What most people don't know is that there are certain situations when breast revision surgery would be a logical decision. Here are a few of those circumstances.
You have old implants and want to upgrade to a new material.
perhaps the most common reason for breast revision surgery is to simply upgrade the type of implants you have. For example, if you have saline implants, you may want to have those exchanged for silicone implants because silicone implants tend to be more resilient and long-lasting. In some cases, damage to an old implant will result in a need for breast revision surgery, which is possible if your implants are made out of the older materials that are known to have issues.
Your breasts have changed shape due to the passage of time.
Naturally, when a person ages, their breast tissue will change shape. Because implants are placed behind the natural breast tissue, when that tissue changes, it can affect the position of the implant. For example, your implants may start to look asymmetrical, or your breasts may droop more now than they did when the implants were first placed inside of your breasts. These breast revisions can be a little more challenging because the natural breast tissue has changed, but overall, desirable results can be achieved.
Your breast implant surgery was not satisfactory the first time.
It is rare, but there are some individuals who are not happy with the appearance of their breasts after an initial breast augmentation. For some people, this occurs because the initial surgeon did not follow the best placement practices or did not have the best training. For example, if one of your breasts appears larger than the other or your breasts appear to be in an awkward position, these would be reasons to seek breast revision surgery. In these cases, breast revision can involve a change in the size of the implants, skin reduction, or other procedures to ensure satisfactory results.
